Music PlayerWhat You Need To KnowHaving your child listen to music has so many important benefits, including improved thinking, coordination, and bonding. But there are a few precautions you should take to make sure what you’re playing doesn’t become a form of noise pollution–possibly over-stimulating your child or contributing to their hearing loss.
What To Avoid
Not too close:Don’t have the music player right next to the child and don’t put headphones on their ears. Maybe you’re not interested in hearing “Baby Beluga” for the fiftieth time, but headphones (or just being close to the speaker) can intensify the sound and damage fragile ear hairs, possibly tied to hearing loss.
RF exposure:If you’re using your cell phone, iPad or iPod to play music, keep it as far from your child as possible. Cell phones (and similar devices) emit Radiofrequency (rf) radiation, which some researchers suggest may increase risk of cancer.
Safer Choices
Distance:Set the music player (or electronic device) some distance from you child and keep the sound at a normal or low decibel.
Soothing songs:Play soothing music at nap or bedtime. Whenever possible, sing or clap along to the music with your child to encourage interactive play.
