Canned Food and Canned BeveragesWhat You Need To Know

Canned food and beverages can be convenient, quick and easy options, but there are some things to consider, especially if you’re pregnant.

What To Avoid
Bisphenol a (bpa): Canned foods and beverages have linings that contain a chemical called Bisphenol a (bpa). BPA can seep into the food from the can lining. BPA is a concern because it can interfere with hormones, and it can be harmful to your health. Some “BPA-Free” cans contain substitutes that are also toxic.
Heat:NEVER heat food or drinks in the cans they come in.
Safer Choices
Skip cans:Your best choice is to skip canned foods and beverages whenever possible, even those labeled “BPA-Free.”
Go fresh:Your safer options are to choose fresh foods as much as possible.
Frozen food:Frozen food may be your second-best option but is sometimes processed, stored and packaged in other kinds of plastic.
Other choices:Try glass, or stainless-steel food containers.
