FishWhat You Need To Know

Fish is a great source of nutrients including protein, vitamins, and minerals, which are important for a healthy pregnancy. However, some fish contain mercury, which can be harmful to a developing baby’s brain and nervous system. To stay safe while enjoying the benefits of fish, here are some tips:

What To Avoid
High mercury:Avoid fish with high mercury levels, usually larger, predatory, fish. Do not eat king mackerel, tuna (Bigeye, Ahi), swordfish, tilefish or shark. These fish have high levels of mercury.
Safer Choices
Local guidance:Check local advisories about the safety of fish caught by family and friends in your local lakes, rivers, and coastal areas
Chunk light tuna:Eat chunk light tuna instead of white albacore tuna. Do not eat more than two cans of chunk light tuna a week.
Low mercury:Some of the most commonly eaten fish that are low in mercury are: salmon, pollock, catfish and canned light tuna.
Healthy and sustainably caught:Choose seafood that has healthy fat, fewer chemicals and is sustainably caught such as wild salmon, sardines, anchovies and herring.
Cook fish properly:Make sure to cook fish thoroughly to kill any harmful bacteria that might be present.
