Most air fresheners are hardly fresh. Instead, they contain a lot of synthetic chemicals that can actually harm your health, rather than clean the air.
When you see “fragrance” on a label, chances are the air freshener (including plug-ins) contains a class of chemicals called phthalates. These chemicals are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), meaning they get into the air and then into your body when you breathe them in.
Phthalates are endocrine disrupting chemicals, which can interfere with the body’s endocrine system and have adverse effects on your child’s developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune systems. They can also trigger headaches, allergic reactions and asthma.
Aerosol sprays no longer contain ozone-depleting chemicals, which were banned in the 1970s, but most still have hydrocarbons and/or compressed gases that contribute to global warming. They also emit VOCs that can cause eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, loss of coordination, and nausea as well as damage to the the liver, kidney and central nervous system.
Even “natural fragrances,” such as pure essential oils, may have harmful health impacts. For example, tea tree and lavender essential oils, often added for fragrance, have been shown to have estrogenic properties that could impact reproductive health. To date, other essential oils have not been tested for this so it’s not known whether or not they have these properties.
