What You Need  To  Know  

  You shouldn’t have to use nasty chemicals to prevent  stinky armpits. Be odor-free and toxic-free with these tips: 

  AVOID   

• Synthetic antioxidants, like butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), are ethoxylated ingredients and can contain trace amounts of carcinogenic byproducts, notably 1,4-Dioxane. They can be tricky to spot on a label, but checking for polyethylene glycol compounds (PEGs) or ingredients such as sodium laureth sulfate and chemicals that end with ‘-eth’ (like laureth, ceteareth or steareth) is a good start. 

• Certain preservatives, like parabens, and other antibacterial and antimicrobial agents, work to prevent bacterial and microbial growth by releasing formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen (a substance capable of causing cancer).  

• Ethanolamine compounds (MEA, DEA & TEA)  are  amino alcohols that are used to balance pH levels in personal care products. They are also used as emulsifiers and foaming agents. Studies suggest these may raise the risk of cancer with chronic exposure.   

• Synthetic fragrances contain phthalates to boost the scent’s staying power. The phthalate commonly used in fragrance products is  diethyl phthalate, or  DEP. Sometimes this won’t be listed, so be cautious if you simply see ‘fragrance’ as an ingredient. Some phthalates are known to be carcinogenic and others may contribute to reproductive and neurodevelopmental problems. 

• Aluminum-based compounds  are commonly used in antiperspirants to clog the skin pores and prevent sweating. Some studies suggest  higher exposures to aluminum may be  linked with  breast cancer, kidney problems and Alzheimer’s. 

• Polypylene glycol, a liquid  derived from natural gas (a non-renewable resource),  helps absorb water.  It  also happens to be used in antifreeze and de-icing agents  and  can irritate the skin and may impact the nervous system.  

  BETTER CHOICES  

• Deodorants and antiperspirants that contain  arrowroot, baking soda, kaolin clay, and/or cornstarch – without all the preservatives and fragrances that may be harmful – are still found to be effective.  

• Products with 100%  vegetable derived  polypylene  glycol are better because this kind doesn’t tend to  irritate the skin and plants are a renewable resource.  

• Simply use good  ol’ fragrance-free soap and shower regularly. You may learn that you’re actually okay without all these products  and it’s more of a habit than a need.
