Two types of dental fillings are available today—dental amalgams (made with a mixture of metals including elemental mercury) and dental resin composites (made with plastic polymers). Both have pros and cons. Amalgams are far more durable but may release mercury vapor overtime and bioaccumulate in the body. Composite resins blend in with the original enamel colors but have to be replaced more often and are made with polymers that include endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Only you and your dentist can figure out what is best based on your particular needs and sensitivities, or those of your child.
