MeatWhat You Need To Know

Thinking about the meat you eat is a smart move, especially when you’re planning for pregnancy or are pregnant.

What To Avoid
Processed meats:Processed meats such as hot dogs, sausages, and deli meats might have added chemicals and Preservatives, including hormones, antibiotics, and Nitrates. Smoked meats may also have negative health impacts.
Conventionally raised meats:Conventionally raised beef and chicken also can contain these hormones and antibiotics. It’s a good idea to limit these and overall eat meat sparingly for your health and to protect the climate from the harms of raising cows.
Charred meats:Avoid consuming charred meats. You may also want to avoid meats prepared at high heat like barbecuing during pregnancy.
Safer Choices
Healthier options:If you eat meat, choose organic or grass-fed meat that’s unprocessed, humanely raised, and free of hormones and antibiotics. Additionally, choose lean cuts and limit consumption of processed meats like salami and sausages.
Trim the fat:If you cannot find or cannot afford organic, humanely raised meats, then trim the fat off the meat to reduce your exposure. Toxics can collect in the fats of animals.
