Styling ProductsWhat You Need To Know

Hair styling products serve different purposes, from helping repair hair to keeping a style in place.

What To Avoid
VOCs:Although aerosol hairsprays no longer contain gases that harm our climate (ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs), some aerosol hairsprays contain Volatile organic compounds (vocs) that can contribute to indoor and outdoor air pollution. Some VOCs and other harmful gases fall to the floor near children rather than rising out windows.
Formaldehyde:Styling gels commonly contain chemicals that release formaldehyde. Exposure to formaldehyde can cause the skin to swell and even blister and poses increased risk of cancer.
Placental extracts:Placental extracts have gained popularity as hair and skin conditioners. Placental extracts contain vitamins and protein, but they also include high levels of the hormone estrogen. Exposure to estrogen through hair products may harm normal hormone function and contribute to children entering puberty earlier than normal.
Safer Choices
Oils & Butters:Skip these problem ingredients and try styling your hair with coconut oil, shea butter, or beeswax instead.
