Researchers discovered that organofluorines, including PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), from pharmaceuticals are entering wastewater, which is sometimes reused as drinking water during droughts. Even after treatment, the wastewater retained high concentrations of PFAS and related compounds, primarily from commonly prescribed medications like antidepressants and statins.
